Latium (Lazio) is a region in Central Italy, on the Tyrrhenian side of the peninsula, except for a small strip on the Adriatic side. Lying to the west on the Tyrrhenian Sea, this region borders to the north with Tuscany, with Umbria and for a short stretch with the Marches. The exhibit, started by then Foreign Minister Amintore Fanfani in the 1960s, was taken up again and revived in December 1999 by then Secretary General Umberto Vattani.

The project was begun to bring harmony between the "container" and the "contents" of the abstract, geometric spaces of the Palazzo Farnesina, and above all, to foster appreciation and knowledge of 20th century Italian art in Italy and abroad.
It is a demonstration of our country's vigour and creative vitality and emphasises the strategic importance that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attributes to cultural and artistic production for Italian foreign policy.
