Latium (Lazio) is a region in Central Italy, on the Tyrrhenian side of the peninsula, except for a small strip on the Adriatic side. Lying to the west on the Tyrrhenian Sea, this region borders to the north with Tuscany, with Umbria and for a short stretch with the Marches. To the east Latium borders with Abruzzo and briefly with Molise and with Campania to the south; within its present limits it has not, however, geographical unity.

 

History. The morphology of Latium is very complex but four main sub-regions can be defined: the Tyrrhenian coast, the inland plains, the mountains of the Latium Pre-Apennines and a true Apennine area. The coast is mainly low and uniform, broken only by the spurs of Linaro point, Mount Circeo (541 m.) and the Gaeta headland: the Ponzian Islands, which are part of Latium, lie opposite the south coast.

Nel corso del '200 S. Tommaso d'Aquino arricchi immensamente la filosofia e la teologia cristiana. Se il suo insegnamento in eta' matura si svolse soprattutto a Parigi, e' in Ciociaria, e in particolare nelle terra toccate da questo itinerario, che Tommaso visse la sua gioventu' e acquisi la sua prima formazione culturale. Siamo nella piana del Liri, dove correva un tempo la Via Latina, che collegava il Lazio con la Campania. Qui fiori nell'antichita' la citta' di Aquinum, sempre fedele a Roma e da questa ricambiata con molti privilegi. Aquinum arrivo' a contare 40 mila abitanti, prima di essere distrutta dalle invasioni barbariche. Risorta nell'Alto Medioevo, divenne feudo dei Conti d'Aquino, la casata da cui nacque Tommaso. In realta' il futuro santo nacque a Roccasecca, borgo fortificato arroccato sulla montagna vicina. Del periodo medievale la cittadina conserva ancora la chiesa di S. Maria della Libera (sec.
