Latium (Lazio) is a region in Central Italy, on the Tyrrhenian side of the peninsula, except for a small strip on the Adriatic side. Lying to the west on the Tyrrhenian Sea, this region borders to the north with Tuscany, with Umbria and for a short stretch with the Marches. To the east Latium borders with Abruzzo and briefly with Molise and with Campania to the south; within its present limits it has not, however, geographical unity.
History. The morphology of Latium is very complex but four main sub-regions can be defined: the Tyrrhenian coast, the inland plains, the mountains of the Latium Pre-Apennines and a true Apennine area. The coast is mainly low and uniform, broken only by the spurs of Linaro point, Mount Circeo (541 m.) and the Gaeta headland: the Ponzian Islands, which are part of Latium, lie opposite the south coast.

Morolo - Frosinone nel Lazio
Il piccolo centro di Morolo, arrampicato sulle pendici dei Monti Lepini, a circa 400 metri di altitudine, si presenta diviso in due nuclei: il più antico occupa la parte più alta del colle intorno al diruto castello (i cui abitanti si chiamano infatti “castellani”); il più recente si trova in basso, più allungato (i cui abitanti sono chiamati “daballeri”, abitanti di basso). La nascita di Morolo viene fatta risalire intorno all’anno 900 d.C. Nel 1200 la potente famiglia dei Colonna costruì un robusto castello sul punto più alto del colle, i cui ruderi sono ancora facilmente visibili dalla piazzetta della Chiesa Collegiata di Santa Maria. Nel 1216 Giovanni da Ceccano vendicò un affronto da parte dei Colonna con la distruzione degli edifici più importanti della cittadina e con l’uccisione di circa 400 abitanti. Nel 1303 il signore locale Thomas de Morolo prese parte alla congiura contro Bonifacio VIII° e venne scomunicato.
